Ticinese Translation Model: Preserving Cultural Heritage with AI
“The Ticino dialect model demonstrates how artificial intelligence can serve not only as a tool for innovation but also for preservation. At a time when many regional dialects are at risk of disappearing, technology offers unprecedented opportunities to breathe new life into valuable linguistic and cultural heritage.”
Challenge
While AI-based language models now excel at translating the world’s major languages, regional dialects remain largely overlooked. The Ticinese dialect, spoken in the Swiss Canton of Ticino, is alive in everyday conversation, including in business contexts, but lacks the structured digital datasets available for official languages.
The challenge was multi-layered:
• There was no standardized digital corpus. Unlike major languages, Ticinese had no readily available training data.
• Unique orthographic features. The dialect uses characters that do not exist in standard Italian (e.g., an “i” with both accent and diaeresis).
• Regional variation. There are four to five different terms for the same concept depending on the geographic area.
• Historical vs. contemporary language. Available written sources dated back to the 1950s–1960s and featured rustic, highly idiomatic language unsuitable for general translation.
• Grammatical peculiarities. Verb tenses and auxiliary verbs differ significantly from standard Italian.
The goal was to create a functional translation model within a short timeframe, starting from a language preserved primarily through oral tradition.
Within the Ticinese business landscape, companies grow and innovate while maintaining a strong connection to their territory and cultural identity.
An AI-based translation solution for the Ticinese dialect enables more natural and inclusive communication, for example by integrating the dialect into cultural ecosystems such as museums and territorial initiatives. This enhances understanding, engagement, and a sense of belonging, demonstrating how technology can enhance local roots while supporting regional digital evolution.
Our AI Solution
Artificialy developed a custom language model using Mixtral, an open-source “mixture of experts” architecture particularly effective for European languages. The approach combined cultural expertise with advanced NLP techniques.
Key components of the solution included:
• Custom OCR development. After testing open-source solutions, we built a proprietary OCR system capable of handling Ticinese-specific graphemes and optimizing digitization conditions.
• Strategic dataset construction. Italian was used as a linguistic bridge, progressively enriching the model with Ticinese content from literary works, theater scripts, poetry, and songs to capture diverse registers and formats.
• Linguistic standardization. Official variants and declensions, such as those defined by the Centro di dialettologia di Bellinzona, were adopted to resolve regional ambiguities.
• Iterative training cycles. Over more than ten training iterations, we refined the model to address verb tenses, auxiliary verbs, and the filtering of overly colorful expressions through data augmentation techniques developed with subject-matter experts.
• Targeted validation. Test sets containing previously unseen sentences were created to quantitatively assess translation quality, achieving satisfactory results after multiple refinement cycles.
The final dataset reached tens of thousands of accurately mapped word pairs between Italian and Ticinese.
Results
Results
The Ticinese translation model demonstrates how AI can preserve endangered linguistic heritage while simultaneously delivering tangible business value.
• First-of-its-kind model for the Ticinese dialect, breathing new life into a language at risk of extinction.
• Commercial adoption. This project enables us today to train on prem LLMs even for rare languages and highly specialized domains such as military, medical, or legal contexts.
• Replicable methodology. The approach has attracted interest from organizations working on other minority languages such as Ladin, proving the model’s scalability to additional “rare” languages with sufficient written sources.
• Innovative applications. Potential integration with digital avatars in museums and cultural institutions to create immersive experiences in the local language.
